Men may be able to buy generic Viagra in the US, but many are not aware of the possibility that the product may have been manufactured for sale in other countries, experts said on Tuesday.
The generic version of Viagra, which is also known as sildenafil citrate, is approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the UK and by the US Food and Drug Administration in the US.
While the pill is available in most countries, it is not legally prescribed for those with heart problems, according to Dr Chris Thompson, the director of the World Health Organization's global heart disease and blood flow research programme.
He said: "We are very fortunate to be able to supply people with this product for a very long time now, and this is great news for everyone. We have the experience and knowledge to make sure that people can have this medicine and can buy it."
The drug, which is also sold under the brand name Viagra, is the first medicine to be approved by the FDA to treat erectile dysfunction.
